How to Switch Mobile or Internet Provider in Switzerland
Switching telecoms in Switzerland is straightforward once you know the notice periods and number portability rules. This guide covers everything step by step.
1. Before you switch
Before cancelling anything, check your current contract for:
- Minimum contract duration: most Swiss mobile and internet contracts run for 12 or 24 months. Leaving early usually triggers a cancellation fee.
- Notice period: typically 30 days, sometimes 60 days for internet contracts.
- Contract end date: if your contract is near its end, wait โ cancelling at the right time avoids fees.
Use comparis.ch or the providers' own websites to compare plans before committing.
2. Switching mobile provider: step by step
- Choose your new plan and sign up with the new provider
- Request number portability when signing up (see section 3)
- Send a written cancellation to your current provider (email is usually sufficient; registered mail is safer)
- Keep your old SIM active until the new one works
- Your number transfers automatically on the agreed date
You do not need to cancel before signing up with the new provider โ in Switzerland, the new provider handles the port as part of the signup process.
3. Keeping your number (number portability)
Number portability is free in Switzerland and required by law. When signing up with a new provider, tell them you want to port your existing number. You will need to provide:
- Your current phone number
- Your current provider's name
- Sometimes: your account number or contract reference
The port typically takes 1โ3 working days. During the transfer window, you may briefly lose service (usually overnight).
4. Switching home internet
Home internet (DSL, fibre or cable) is slightly more complex than mobile, as installation may be required. Steps:
- Check which providers serve your address โ not all providers reach all buildings
- Sign up with the new provider; they will tell you the installation timeline
- Cancel your old contract in writing, with enough notice (usually 30 days)
- Coordinate the dates so you don't have a gap in connectivity
- Return any rented equipment to your old provider on time (routers, TV boxes)
5. Common pitfalls
- Cancelling too early: cancelling before your new contract is confirmed risks a gap in service
- Missing the notice deadline: if you miss the cancellation window, your contract auto-renews for another period
- Not returning equipment: unreturned equipment triggers replacement fees
- Bundled contracts: if your mobile and internet are bundled, cancelling one may affect the other
6. Main providers at a glance
Switzerland has three main network operators (Swisscom, Sunrise, Salt) and several MVNOs that resell their capacity at lower prices. For a full comparison including prepaid options, see our mobile plans guide.
