Arrival Registration in Switzerland: What the "Digital Card" Actually Means
Switzerland does not have a standalone digital arrival card. New residents register at their Gemeinde (commune) within 14 days of arrival. Here is exactly what to do — and what "precheck" refers to.
1. No digital arrival card exists — yet
If you searched for "digital arrival card Switzerland" or "precheck suisse" and found confusing results, you are not alone. Switzerland does not currently operate a digital arrival card that residents or long-stay visitors fill in before or on arrival — unlike some countries (e.g. the UK's eVisa or the US ESTA).
The official registration for new residents is the Anmeldung at the local Gemeinde (commune), described below. This must be done within 14 days of taking up residence — not before arriving.
2. The Anmeldung: what it is and how to do it
The Anmeldung is the official residence registration. Every person who takes up residence in Switzerland — Swiss citizens and foreign nationals alike — must register with their Gemeinde.
Timeline: within 14 days of moving into your Swiss address.
Documents to bring:
- Valid passport (or national ID for EU/EFTA nationals)
- Signed rental contract or a letter from your host confirming your address
- For employed newcomers: employment contract
- For non-EU/EFTA nationals: your approved permit document (issued before entry)
- Passport photos — check your specific Gemeinde's requirements; some accept digital photos
Online pre-registration: Many cantons and communes now offer online pre-registration or a full digital Anmeldung. Availability varies significantly by location. Check your Gemeinde's website before visiting. Cities like Zurich, Bern, and Basel have well-developed online portals; smaller communes may require an in-person appointment.
After registration: You receive an Anmeldebestätigung (registration confirmation). For non-Swiss nationals, this is also when your residence permit document is issued or ordered.
3. What is "precheck Suisse"?
The term "precheck" appears in several Swiss contexts:
- SEM eGesuch portal: The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) operates an online portal (eGesuch) where non-EU/EFTA applicants and their employers can submit permit applications electronically. This is sometimes referred to informally as an online "precheck" of permit eligibility.
- Airport security PreCheck: Unrelated to immigration — this refers to expedited airport security screening offered by some carriers.
- ETIAS pre-travel authorisation: The EU's upcoming Electronic Travel Information and Authorisation System (see below).
If you are looking for a form to fill in before arriving in Switzerland as a new resident, there is currently no such universal form. Non-EU/EFTA workers need their permit approved before arrival (done by the employer); EU/EFTA citizens simply arrive and register at the Gemeinde.
4. ETIAS: the Schengen pre-travel check (planned)
The EU is developing ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) — a pre-travel authorisation for nationals of visa-free third countries (e.g. US, UK, Canada, Australia) who wish to visit the Schengen area, including Switzerland.
Key facts:
- ETIAS applies to short-stay visitors (up to 90 days), not to people moving to Switzerland to live and work
- Switzerland participates as a Schengen member state
- As of September 2026, ETIAS had not yet launched. The launch date has been postponed multiple times. Check travel-europe.europa.eu/etias for the current official status
- Once live, ETIAS will be an online application, valid for 3 years, costing €7
ETIAS does not replace the Anmeldung for people taking up residence. It is a visitor travel authorisation, not a residence registration.
